In Times of Trouble
As we've all watched the events following hurricane Katrina, I
(Sharon) was most moved to tears by the moms with children and
infants. I'm sure you thought as I did, "What if that were me?
What would I do?" I know that I would want someone to see my pain
and do something about it. I would want to be taken to the highest
authority and given priority. I would want an advocate.
As the situations of these people became more and more desperate
and hopeless, I found myself longing to be there to be the one
to speak up on their behalf. We heard about the people trying
to get someone to stop and help, but everyone was busy or worried
about their own safety. If there has ever been a picture of people
needing an advocate, someone to represent them, we've seen it
in the shocking aftermath.
Romans 8:26-28 talks about the advocate we have as believers in
Christ: "God's spirit is right alongside helping us along.
If we don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does
our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs,
our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves
and keeps us present before God. That's why we can be so sure
that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into
something good." (the Message)
When we need someone to intervene for us, He is there and takes
our request to the highest authority. When we are desperate, our
need doesn't go unnoticed. When we are joyful, He rejoices. When
our hearts break, He sees and mourns with us. When you don't know
what to do as a mom, He understands your sighs. When you have
no energy left for your family, He interprets your groans and
takes them to the Father. You are not alone. You have an advocate,
a representative who knows you better than you know yourself.
Though the world may feel like it's falling apart, He is the foundation,
the only thing that won't change. Are you feeling desperate? Do
you feel like life is hopeless? Call out to Him. Keep trusting
Him. Even when we don't understand, He is still trustworthy. He
is our strength.
Father,
Our hearts are broken with this tragedy. We want to trust You,
Lord, but we are confused. The pain is almost unbearable even
from just watching on television. Comfort those in desperate situations.
We pray especially for the moms and their children. I pray for
energy for them as they survive this crisis. Place upon our hearts
the things we can do to help. Supply their needs, Lord and draw
them to You. And Lord, we thank you for being our advocate. Nothing
in our lives slips by You. You are our refuge and strength, an
ever-present help in trouble. (Ps. 46:1) Help us look to you in
every situation of our lives however big or small the need might
be. Thank you for hearing us, and for caring about our concerns.
We pray this in Jesus' name holding tightly to you...Amen
P.S. If any of you affected by the hurricane are able to get email,
please let us know how we can pray for you and your family. If
you have a physical need that you would like to share, please
feel free to email us. You are constantly on our minds.
