Earlier this week, my daughter had the yucks...in the car! Oh, joy! The amazing blessing about all this is that she was only sick one time. How grateful I am! The next day, though, she wasn't feeling the best and couldn't eat a lot. Popsicles, however, sounded wonderful to her. So, she began describing to her daddy exactly the kind of popsicle she wanted. "I like the whole fruit kind, but strawberry only."
He replied, "How do you know you only like strawberry?"
"Because," she confidently answered, "I've had orange and lime and I like strawberry best. Will you get strawberry?" Before my husband could answer, she looked at me and said, "Should I go with him?"
We laughed about her lack of trust in her dad to get the exact item. However, I realized that often, I'm like that with God. "God, I want my husband to help me clean the house exactly like I do." And before God has a chance to reply or put that thought in my husband's mind, I take the first step and explain to my husband how he should help me more.
It happens with the kids, too. I've often prayed, "Lord, please help my children to speak kindly to each other." Within the same hour I've scrunched my face and heard myself yelling, "Don't speak to her that way! That's just rude!" Rather than letting God control my response to direct my children in the way they should go, I often take matters in my own hands and model something I later regret.
Psalm 37:5 says, "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act." (RSV) So, the next time you feel like taking things into your own hands, commit it to Him again. He is trustworthy. He is able. He knows exactly what we need.
Lord, help us trust You. Remind us to turn things over to You. Forgive us when we have shown our distrust by trying to handle everything on our own...again. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
This new year, I pray that the Lord will open my eyes and yours to see His blessings more clearly than ever before.
Trusting Him...
