April 30, 2006 The Treasure Finder We call her the treasure finder. My middle daughter, Crislynn, has always been drawn to rocks, screws, artificial flowers that have fallen from their stem, those plastic size things from hangers at department stores, paper clips. Any little thing on the ground the rest of us might consider to be junk, she hoards as precious valuables. This fascination with looking for treasures has often been very helpful because Crislynn can find things we have misplaced. A missing shoe, a cell phone, car keys, the last piece to a puzzle, you name it, when anybody loses anything, we ask for her help. More often than not, she looks until she finds it. She is persistent. As moms, we constantly need to be treasure finders - seeking God's wisdom and insight to solve the dilemmas that come up everyday. "How do I get this baby to stop crying? What am I going to do with my little boy who insists on destroying everything in the house? I wonder what I can do about the rolling eyes and disrespectful attitude of my daughter." There are lots of times I have no idea what to do, but when I seek answers from the Lord, He will give insight. Laurie did this earlier this week. When her kids were constantly fussing, she asked God to give her creativity to encourage sibling love! Wouldn't you know that during school that day, they were studying about brothers and sisters in India who treat each other with respect and love? God is amazingly creative and timely. He has treasures waiting for us if we will seek Him. Proverbs 2:3-6 says, "...if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will ... find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." No matter the age of our kids, there will always be new questions, new struggles, and new reasons for searching for insight and wisdom from the Lord. When we don't know what to do with a screaming child in the grocery store, how to motivate our kids to finish their homework, or what to do when our child is facing failure for the first time, we can cry out to Him. He will give answers we would never have come up with on our own. He gives wisdom. From His mouth He offers us knowledge and understanding for our unique circumstances. Seek Him for insight about your concerns. He has treasures waiting to be discovered. Lord, You offer us wisdom and understanding. When life is chaotic, help us remember to ask for Your help. If ever there was a time that we have needed your insight, we need it now, as we parent the children you have given us. (You can fill in anything that is worrying you...struggles with a child, yourself, your husband, work....) In Jesus name, Amen. Mama Drama
How many times in a week is someone in your family searching for some lost article - the car keys, someone's glasses, a favorite toy...? When the situation arises, let it be a reminder to you and your family to seek the Lord as you face struggles.
Hope you have a Happy Mother's Day! Seeking Him...

Speaking of Searching...
Our new book Hold You, Mommy will hit stores this week (including some Wal-Mart stores where it is usually in a display for Mother's Day at the front of the store). So, when you're out and about, would you "search" for the book and let a friend know where they can find it. We've put lots of "treasures" inside the book. The format of the devotional each day is the same as this "Mom-e-Moment" - a story, scripture and application, prayer, and "mama drama" (a practical way to "act out" or apply the reading.) If you haven't ordered your copy, you can find it at bookstores, online, or order it here. Maybe some of your mom friends would enjoy going through this book or our first book, Mom and Loving It, together. Both books have suggestions for use as a group study. |
