A Fresh Start

As a little girl, I still remember the excitement I felt at the beginning of a new school year. The anticipation would begin weeks before school actually started with a trip to Gibsons to buy school supplies. I'll never forget the thrill of choosing a new lunch box, new folders, pens, crayons, pencils, and a special notebook - not to mention our trip to get school clothes! I was eager to begin. It was a new year . . . a fresh start. Last year didn't matter so much anymore because this was a new beginning! There was a clean slate waiting to be written on.

There is something refreshing, invigorating and stimulating about starting something new, going places you've never been before, experiencing things you've never experienced before, stepping out of your comfort zone into the unknown. It can be very exciting, and totally terrifying at the same time.

What are you excited (or terrified) about that is about to happen in your life? Or maybe you've been stuck in a rut and are longing for a fresh start? Perhaps there are recurring struggles in your life and you are yearning to start anew, but you find yourself falling into the same old habits.

One of my favorite verses promises, "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23) God doesn't give up on us even when we sometimes give up on ourselves. His compassion and mercy are new every morning! Trust Him in your new start; He will give you the strength you need. God promises in Ezekiel 36:26, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you, your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees . . ." See, if you are willing for Him start something new in you, He will do it!

I have written Psalm 143:8-9 on my bathroom mirror. Not only have I memorized it, but I pray it each morning as I start my day. Let it be your prayer today. Lord, "Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul." Amen



In 2 Corinthians 5:17 God's word states, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" He is the God of new beginnings!

When you look in the bathroom mirror each morning, be reminded of the fresh start God offers for Today!

Find a dry-erase marker and write the verses from Psalm 143 and 2 Corinthians 5 on your mirror....

And while you're at it, leave a message for your spouse!

When Laurie was a little girl, she often heard her pastor quote Romans 6:4 as he brought someone up from the baptismal waters. "Walk in newness of life!" But to her little ears she heard, "Walk with Eunice O'Life!"
